Mary Lee Gowland reunited with two of her poet-friends for a reading at Beyond Baroque in Venice, California, on October 19th.
She met Karen Holden in Jack Grape's writing workshop through U.C.L.A. extension in 1984, and Nels Christianson in Peter Levitt's workshop in 1988. Karen lives in Long Beach, California and Nels lives in Santa Monica.
All three have been active in California Poets in the Schools - Mary Lee was the Madera County coordinator until she moved to Texas in 2010. Nels is a current board member.
Karen and Nels read poems and Mary Lee read poems and prose from her memoir Posing For My Father.
"It was so fun to be with my friends again and see poets I hadn't seen in years. And it was really rewarding to have total strangers buy my book." says Mary Lee.
"Next year I hope to return to California and give a reading up in the Sierras where I lived for twenty years, or perhaps San Francisco where my sister lives."
